We break away from our inherited colonial tradition of boot, suit, tie, and "pukka" English. Assemblies are not addressed by the Mother Superior or Father Principal. Children never address their teachers as "Sir" and "Ma'am". In the Nursery Class and Stds I to IV, instruction is completely informal. Little pupils sit on the ground in groups, and a single class can tackle three different subjects simultaneously. Teachers move from one group to another encouraging self learning and experiment.
In Pallikoodam you don't hear babies lisping "Twinkle Twinkle little star " or hymns and prayers learnt by rote.
The Primary classes sing old Malayalam "Tharattu" which were re-discovered and resurrected from cold storage.
Children are encouraged to speak in Malayalam (which is our mother tongue). We have found that using Malayalam as the medium of instruction in lower classes leads to a substantial increase in self-confidence and stimulates the imagination. Once they have a proper grounding in their own language and culture their ability to learn English is no longer a dreaded chore. Out going students are fluent in both English and Malayalam. As a Council School , we use English as medium for the ICSE and ISC classes. Students are able to cope with English language in higher level of education in India and Abroad with no problems whatsoever. Students from Pallikoodam have gone on to be Rhodes, Ramanujam and Commonwealth Scholars. They study in the best Universities across the world.
